Chicago, IL: PreScouter, a Chicago-based research intelligence firm, has released a detailed report on the current state of the meat alternative space. Given the increasing demand for meat alternatives which is projected to reach $140 billion in 2029, in addition to environmental concerns, and the need to feed the world’s growing population, PreScouter investigated the current state of meat alternative space by identifying key drivers and technologies in place.

“There seems to be an upsurge in the plant-based meat business with established meat alternative companies such as Field Roast being joined by a number of new players,” comments Dr. Gloria Wada, PreScouter Project Architect and one of the 3 researchers who compiled the report. “Even traditional meat companies like Tyson Foods have jumped into the alternative meat market by developing their own line-up of meat alternatives,” adds Dr. Wada.

The report, or Intelligence Brief as PreScouter calls it, details eight companies and four academic organizations engaged in creating meat alternatives. The three types of meat alternatives covered are plant-based meat analogues, 3D printed meat analogues and cellular agriculture. The report also details process and product-related aspects including ingredients and structure formation, nutritional value, post-extrusion processing, consumer benefits, and product-related environmental impacts.

Technical Director of the Food & Beverage practice at PreScouter and Senior Project Architect, Gareth Armanious sees that the advancements in food technology and the availability of plant based protein sources have contributed enormously to the changing landscape of food products we see today. “In addition to the dedicated meat alternative startups, we are seeing the list of major players both currently offering, and looking to develop plant-based alternatives continue to grow by the day. In particular, I look forward to developments in cellular agriculture over the coming years as an area of growth and technological advancement,” concludes Armanious.
