Electric Vehicles and Data Centers Are Making the Switch to 48V Systems

New Report Details How 48V Architectures Can Unlock More Power While Decreasing Emissions

April 11, 2022

Chicago, IL: PreScouter, a Chicago-based research intelligence firm, has released a new report that looks at how the adoption of 48V systems can benefit companies in the automotive and data center sectors and why 48V will be a game-changer moving forward.

“The 48V landscape, for electromobility and data centers, offers a rich set of advantages over the traditional 12V system,” says Jorge Hurtado, PhD, a PreScouter Researcher who coathored the report. He goes on to explain, “Everything related to the 48V architecture, wherever it is being implemented, pinpoints its ability to improve energy conservation, which relates to efficiency and flexibility, leading to the reduction of capital and operating costs. This makes the 48V landscape simply the most compelling approach for the automotive and datacenter industries.”

According to the Intelligence Brief, 48V technology is the future of automotive transportation, with 1 out of 10 cars sold across the world expected to be a 48V mild hybrid vehicle (i.e., electric assisted) by 2025.

Regarding data centers, the report describes how the adoption of 48V main bus architectures, which will reduce distribution losses by a factor of 16 compared to 12V power delivery, will help balance cost and efficiency as deployments scale to the level of 13 million new servers installed in data centers every year.

In addition to providing a clear overview of the benefits of 48V for both the automotive sector and data centers, the Intelligence Brief also presents a landscape of the key segments needed to build a 48V infrastructure as well as highlighting the key players and global developments in each field, by region.

“The shift to 48V infrastructure in both the automotive and data center markets will enable increased growth and scalability through increased efficiencies,” states Sofiane Boukhalfa, PhD, Technical Director of the High Tech and Aerospace & Defense Practices at PreScouter. “Moreover, it will contribute to improved sustainability goals through reduced emissions that are central to many corporate development strategies today. As such, understanding and preparing for this shift will allow competitors in these industries to gain and maintain a competitive advantage in their markets,” he adds.
