Scouting for technologies to extend food product shelf life

About the client:

The client, a leading provider of packaging solutions, was interested in investigating and developing innovative solutions to improve the shelf life of grocery items that are packaged in-store (i.e., meats, bakery items, produce, and prepared foods). The focus for the client was primarily on finding mid- and near-term solutions.

Challenge:

The challenge for PreScouter was to present the client with information about a variety of novel technology innovations regarding practical concerns such as how the tech worked, its efficacy at improving shelf life, how a material would affect the degradation of the product, whether the material would absorb wavelengths of light typically used in stores, its recyclability, etc.

Approach:

To tackle the client’s challenge, PreScouter searched through secondary and primary resources such as publicly available information from market reports, white papers, research articles, and patent listings. Technologies of interest to the client included novel materials, modifications to existing packaging materials, modifications to packaging such as coatings and sealant technologies, indicators/sensors within the package, catalyst additives, and improvements to sustainability and recyclability.

Outcome:

PreScouter presented the client with various viable options for new packaging solutions, and they began to move forward with plans to develop a new line of packaging that both improved product shelf life and was more sustainable.
